The special issue of the 12th Conference on Informatics in Education (CIE 2020) is published under the European Journal of Engineering Research and Science (EJERS). The Conference on Informatics in Education is co-organized by the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus and the Department of Informatics of Ionian University, Greece, in collaboration with the Greek Computer Society (GCS) and under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Education. This is the fourth consecutive year in which selected articles presented at the conference are published after a review in the journal. The published manuscripts are selected under a double peered review process among a significant amount of manuscripts submitted to the conference.

The current special issue includes 11 articles related to informatics issues in education. More specifically, the issue includes two articles that study qualitatively and quantitatively the effects of the pandemic on distance education. In addition, two articles deal with the design of distance education courses using digital media such as mobile applications and online platforms. In addition, two articles focus on augmented reality learning and the use of personalized learning environments. Three articles approach STEAM issues with a focus on educational robotics. Finally, two articles examine issues of managing academic strategy projects through models and methodologies and performance issues of learners through data mining processes.

A significant number of articles have already been applied in academic and school practice and can therefore be helpful to the educational community. In addition, the articles have the necessary theoretical background to be used as a reference in future research, aimed at the integration of informatics in education.
